Canada’s Famous BeaverTails & the World’s Largest Skating Rink
Deaf Couple ASL Winter Vlog – McGuire’s Journey
We filmed this travel vlog in February 2019 in Ottawa, Canada, during one of the most magical times of year. Snow was falling, skaters were gliding, and the smell of warm pastries filled the air. Join us as we explore two true Canadian icons: BeaverTails and the Rideau Canal Skateway.

🧡 Tasting Canada's Iconic BeaverTails
Our first stop was the ByWard Market, one of Ottawa’s most historic and vibrant neighborhoods. We visited the original BeaverTails stand — a must-try for anyone visiting the city!
We ordered two different kinds: the classic cinnamon-sugar and one with rich chocolate spread. These deep-fried, hand-stretched pastries are shaped like a beaver’s tail (a proud Canadian symbol!) and topped with all kinds of sweet goodness. Warm, soft, and absolutely delicious — they were the perfect treat for a snowy day.

⛸️ Skating on the Rideau Canal – The World’s Largest Skating Rink
Next, we walked along the legendary Rideau Canal Skateway, officially recognized as the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink. This UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches nearly 8 kilometers (5 miles) through downtown Ottawa — like a frozen river of joy.
Although we didn’t skate, we loved strolling on the frozen canal, taking in the scenic views and festive energy all around us. We signed our thoughts in ASL and captured the beauty of winter through our Deaf perspective — a peaceful moment surrounded by snow, ice, and Canadian charm.
If you do want to skate, this is one of the most iconic winter experiences in the world — gliding through a historic capital city on a natural ice path is truly unforgettable!
